Resumo

The results of some studies related to volunteer activities performed in the Catholic Church helped to develop this study. Objective: Study with the aim of outlining the profile of disabled people living in the Parish of the Risen Christ in the Diocese of Sobral-Ceará. Method: This is a study with a quantitative approach, carried out from July to September 2009, with 117 deficient residents within the Parish of the Risen Christ in Sobral, Ceará. Data were collected using a questionnaire with closed questions. Results: Were shown the following rates: aged 21 to 59 years (51.28%), unmarried (50.43%), pensioners (42.74%), with an income of one minimum salary (53.85%) and uneducated (75.21%). Own their own homes (71.79%), with tap water (76.92%), electricity (95.73%), garbage collection (73.50%), bathroom with toilet (71.79%). Stands out mental retardation, present in 35.90% of the participants and congenital deficiencies 41.03%. Multivariate analysis identified three significant factors associated with the origin (district or headquarters) of subjects: Water supply (p <0.000), electricity (p <0.000) and garbage collection (p <0.000). Conclusion: The low socioeconomic status may contribute to deficient people unaware of their rights. Health professionals who care for these people need to be aware of this problem, know the laws that hold and encourage them to fight for their rights. Nurses should be inserted in this process, which strengthens the development of their social role as an occupational category in the health field.
