Resumo

Objetivando obter uma compreensão da evolução histórica da Teoria da Diversidade e Universalidade do Cuidado Cultural (TDUCC) realizamos uma pesquisa documental das trajetória e produção intelectual de Madeleine Leininger a partir de consultas à base de dados (Medline), páginas da internet relacionadas à Leininger e visitas à bibliotecas. A TDUCC vem sendo aplicada em diferentes países do mundo se firmando como uma importante teoria para o desenvolvimento do cuidado fundamentado na cultura de nossa clientela. Acreditamos que a visão geral do contexto vivido por Leininger e suas influências para a construção de uma teoria de enfermagem internacionalmente aceita, possa ser útil para aqueles que desejam se enveredar pela pesquisa na área de enfermagem transcultural a encontrar um caminho para guiar a sua prática assistencial, de ensino e pesquisa.
