Paradigm shift in the development of nursing information systems

Abstract

The purpose of this work is to describe the emergence of alternative paradigms in information systems development and research showing that the crisis of the dominant paradigm has had an influence in the development of nursing information systems. An attempt has been made to focus on the dominant paradigm (positivism/functionalism) and on the alternative paradigms of inquiry in information systems. The analysis points out a paradigmatic crisis in nursing with the appearance of a new consciousness of the meaning of a paradigm which stress the practice in systems development. This new paradigmatic perspective try to define a new worldview with implications in nursing practice which claims a change of perspective in the social actors involved.
