Resumen
Objetivo: Aprender las representaciones maternas sobre el cuidado de los recién-nacidos con peso muy bajo en unidades de internación neonatal. Método: Estudio cualitativo con 41 madres entrevistadas entre noviembre de 2011 y julio de 2012. Para su análisis, se utilizó el referencial de las Representaciones Sociales, y se siguió el método del Discurso del Sujeto Colectivo (DSC). Resultados: Emergieron nueve ideas centrales: miedo de lo inesperado, dificultad en la aceptación de la separación, dificultad en hablar del bebé, posibilidad concreta de muerte, impotencia frente a la internación del hijo, culpa por no lograr cuidar del hijo, espera por un milagro, confianza en el equipo y la satisfacción que la proximidad con el recién nacido le da a la madre. Conclusión: se identificaron aspectos dificultadores, como el miedo de lo desconocido y la separación del hijo. Por otro lado, la proximidad con el recién nacido se configuró como un aspecto facilitador. Se resalta la necesidad de intervenciones direccionadas a la madre, como apoyo e inserción gradual en el proceso de cuidar.
