Abstract

Objective: To map the available scientific evidence on the use of protocols on oral hygiene to prevent the occurrence of aspiration pneumonia in intensive care. Method: A scoping review protocol, which has been developed in accordance with the provisions of the Manual for Evidence Synthesis and registered in the Open Science Framework. The research question was formulated according to the acronym PCC (“Population, Concept, and Context”). It means “population”: patients that were admitted to the intensive care units; “concept”: protocols on oral hygiene; “context”: prevention of aspiration pneumonia in the intensive care units. The searches shall be carried out on the following platforms: Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS; Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, in Portuguese), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, or MEDLARS Online (MEDLINE), Google Scholar; Portal of Journals of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES; Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, in Portuguese), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). After excluding duplicates in the EndNote software, the studies shall be exported to the Rayyan software for the screening stage; they shall comply with the eligibility criteria. The research shall be reported in accordance with the provisions of the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). It is expected to identify and map a body of scientific evidence on protocols on oral hygiene to prevent the occurrence of aspiration pneumonia in patients in the intensive care units.
