Abstract
this text aims at considering the care provided by obstetrics nurses in the birth process and ponders aspects related to the number of specialists, the factors involved in the development of new professionals and the ethical principles that should guide their practice. It presents as essential elements of the humanized care: the relationship, the genuine presence, the share of knowledge, the comprehension attitude, the sensitive, the technical competence and the interdisciplinarity. The conclusion is that, despite the legal basis and the increasing number of obstetrical nurses, there is countless difficulties faced by this professional related to its action in the health team of the obstetrical center. It is necessary to keep investing in the education of professionals with both technical and human dealing competence, so that alternatives to transform this reality are embodied and these professionals are respected as true expertise in the world of obstetrical assistance.
