Continuous education in the context of psychosocial care: search convergent – care*

This is a dissertation project of the Professional Masters in Health Education from Federal Fluminense University which aims to introduce and lead a discussion and reflection on the process of working with, and continuing the education of a Psychosocial Care Children Centers (CAPSi) employees; to encourage CAPSi employees to reveal the reality of the education service, their needs and the implications of performing/promoting psychosocial care; to develop and implement a project based on psychosocial care and worker involvement in continually building new attitudes and new thinking, and therefore differentiating new ways / models in routine / work process / change minds and skills in doing the same job  daily work. Method: An exploratory study of the field, adopting a qualitative approach based on the methodological framework of convergent-care, is to be held in a CAPSi at São Gonçalo (RJ). The subjects are all professional employees working in this setting, and ethical aspects will be respected according to Resolution 196/96.

THE SITUATION PROBLEM AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE


After the psychiatric reform movement that set a new paradigm in mental health care, outpatient services such as the CAPS (Center for Psychosocial Care) They are different stuffs. First, we’ve talked about the Psychosocial Care Centers specifically for children, and now we are discussing about the beginning of the Psychosocial Care Centers in general, Psychosocial Care Centers (NAPS), Outpatient Mental Health Day Hospitals, mental health services in general hospitals, living in centers, among other therapeutic residences, were established. These have demonstrated the effectiveness of replacing long periods of hospitalization by investing in comprehensive care aimed at social inclusion. The perspective of psychosocial care includes attention to the full exercise of citizenship and the concept of health/illness as an aspect of the quality of life. The new approach to mental health is a comprehensive one and moves towards a new way of thinking about people with mental disorders. This is important because, in the past, investigators only have studied the disease, and have not considered the patients and their existence.  This can be done through a belief in the autonomy and uniqueness of the individual patient (1). Helping the need for reform has the same justification as the need for change within mental health training. It is not possible to train professionals to meet these complex demands for care from the perspective of psychosocial care without reproducing these kinds of assistance. In order to meet the needs of the whole multidisciplinary team, continuing education in mental health becomes an instrument for the development of professionals who have to take care of patients in such psychological distress. The continuing health education program (EPS) is dedicated to training and developing employees at Single System of Health (SUS). The proposal is seen as an action that can contribute to the necessary transformation of educational processes and teaching practices, to cover the needs of SUS and its services (2). The discussion and the construction of knowledge results in an updated team that focuses on quality of care. So, the education of these professionals is a permanent development in order to assist them in taking decisions, and in developing and improving the health care of the population (3). The EPS is capable of providing a situation that allows the construction and reconstruction of mental health care. This project assumes a strategic position as part of continuing education to support the Mental Health System in Brazil.


RESEARCH QUESTIONS

How do the needs of workers, patients and families, and the reality of CAPSi, interfere with the promotion of psychosocial care?

How does CAPSi involve workers in the context of psychosocial care?

How would the continuing education service be determined into the CAPSi how could be possible to realize the education process inside the CAPSi’s  based upon the psychosocial care and the activities developed by the employeest? There is a hypothesis that the employees actions have effect into the continuing education service, the psychosocial care and implications about how they develop their activities?



OBJECTIVES

To encourage CAPSi employees to reveal the reality of the service they provide, their needs and the implications in order to promote psychosocial care; to introduce and lead a process of discussion and reflection on the process of working with, and continuing the education of, CAPSi workers; to prepare a draft plan of the service to provide continuing education in CAPSi based on psychosocial care and worker involvement, in continually building new attitudes and new thinking, and therefore developing good skills as part of their daily routine at the CAPSI.



HYPOTHESIS

Assuming that continuing health education facilitates a pedagogical strategy for mental health in order to contribute to the consolidation of psychosocial care.



METHODOLOGY

This is an exploratory, qualitative study whose backdrop is a Psychosocial Care Center for Children (CAPSi) at São Gonçalo (RJ). The subjects are a multiprofessional team which cares for such children. A demographic data form will be used to gather information about the population through focus group workshops, and a questionnaire will also be applied to obtain deteails about the subjects. The meetings will be recorded. The methodological framework is that of Convergent-Search Assistance (CSA). This research project was submitted to the Ethics Committee in Research to fulfill the needs of Resolution No. 196/96.
